Frequently Asked Questions

What is All America Reads (AAR)?

All America Reads is a nationwide project meant to encourage reading and discussion. AAR has two main goals: one, to encourage middle and high school students to read while providing them with the necessary strategies for comprehending the text; and two, to provide reading guides and information for all readers, including exciting and innovative programs for book groups.

How did AAR start?

The success of city and statewide reading programs caused educators in Virginia, as well as English and Language Arts specialists in several other states, to create a nationwide reading program. AAR officially started September 1, 2001. As of January 1, 2003, the program is sponsored and hosted by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.

How is the AAR book selected?

AAR consulted a nationwide group of teachers, librarians, parents, reading specialists, booksellers and community leaders. This group selected Wish You Well by David Baldacci as the program text for the 2001-2002 school year, then chose to retain the title as the program selection for the 2002-2003 school year. For the next book, nominations were solicited from participants, publishers, teachers, and reading specialists, and a selection committee selected The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver for the 2003-2004 school year.

How can I participate?

Anyone can join the adventure. Look for discussion groups at your local high school, library or literacy organization. Also, join an online discussion group. It's that easy!

Is there a participation fee?

AAR doesn't charge a participation fee. Some program partners across the country, however, may offer community programs that require an admission fee.

Will the AAR author sign books?

The author will be unable to sign books because of the tremendous volume of books being read for AAR.

Who are the AAR partners and sponsors?

New partners and sponsors are supporting AAR regularly. Review a complete list of the partners and sponsors.
